About

In 2019 I took over the task of setting the Swanage Carnival's annual "Treasure Hunt" - a well established tradition, raising funds for local good causes and getting locals and visitors alike looking with fresh eyes at the town around them.

When it became clear that due to Covid-19 lockdown, Carnival would have to be cancelled in 2020, I got to thinking about ways in which the Treasure Hunt could go ahead anyway. It seemed that, with modern technology, it might be possible to create a "virtual" treasure hunt that could be completed from home using Google's mapping and streetview tools. As a freelance software consultant and developer with experience using Google mapping, I had a head start when it came to putting this site together! The look and feel of the site is based on the "answers" site I created for Carnival 2019 - see Carnival 2019.

Having been self-isolating and barely got out onto the streets of Swanage, all the clues were set using Google Streetview only. When you play the Lockdown Hunt, please do not walk the streets of Swanage looking for the answers... firstly, you won't find them there, and secondly, the route is not walkable! (You'll see what I mean if you play it).

I really hope you enjoy this year's Swanage Carnival Treasure Hunt. Have fun finding the answers, relive some Swanage memories, note down some places to explore next year, and - please - make a donation to Carnival. Funds raised will be put to good use, covering some of the unavoidable costs of a cancelled Carnival, and seeding funding for next year. So many local charities benefit directly from the funds that Carnival raises, and this year's pandemic has hit these organisations doubly hard, by removing this funding source. Visit the main Carnival site here or on clue 10, and scroll down to donate via PayPal (no PayPal account is needed).
